Think about brushing your teeth before bed—it’s something you do without much conscious effort. This automaticity works in your favor when it comes to positive habits but can be challenging when dealing with negative ones.

Positive Habit: Drinking a glass of lemon water in the morning
Cue: Time of day (6:30 AM), part of my morning routine (the first thing I do before making coffee).

Cue: Time of day (around 8:30 AM), part of my established morning routine.
Negative Habit: Snacking on unhealthy food at night
Cue: Location (the couch), time of day (around 8 PM), emotional state (fatigue or stress), social influence (family members also snacking).

Cue: Emotional state (boredom or stress), pattern (picking up my phone and automatically opening the app), location (often on the couch).

Positive habits don’t necessarily need to change. Instead, you can use them as “anchors” for building new, supportive habits. For example, if you already drink lemon water in the morning, you could add a 5-minute meditation practice right after. This approach, known as habit stacking, allows you to piggyback on existing routines to create new ones. For instance:
